Unsettled Westerly Flow to Favour the Southern Lakes with Small Shots
Summary
The Southern Lakes got another 5-15cm of snow Monday night, adding to a three-quarters metre total over the past week, creating excellent conditions. Mt Hutt picked up 15cm, and Mt Ruapehu received up to 40cm. More fronts are expected in the coming days, bringing mixed weather and additional snow, though lower elevations may see rain.
Short Term Forecast
Wednesday to Friday (18th to 20th September)
On Wednesday, the Southern Lakes will have a mix of sun and cloud with light snow showers in the afternoon, potentially sleety at lower levels. Canterbury and Mt Ruapehu will start clear and cold, but clouds and showers will build later as winds strengthen. A front on Thursday will bring snow to the Southern Lakes, with rain and snow showers in Canterbury and heavier snowfalls on Mt Ruapehu. Friday will start fine, but snow and rain will return by midday, with strong winds across all resorts.
The Weekend (21st & 22nd September)
Extended Forecast
A low may cross the North Island on Tuesday, bringing cold air to the South Island and light snow to resorts through Wednesday.
