More Spring Powder to Come after Southern Lakes Cops another Big Load

Summary

The Southern Lakes received 20-30cm of snow on Sunday, adding to last week's total. Canterbury saw a light dusting over its 15-20cm from Friday. Monday is another great day, with 5-10cm more expected by Tuesday. Light snow is forecast for Wednesday, with rain and snow late Thursday. Mt Ruapehu is set for 10-25cm of snow below base levels on Tuesday.

Short Term Forecast

Monday & Tuesday (16th & 17th September)

Clouds clear over the South Island on Monday, with light snow flurries at Mt Hutt until midday. A strong southerly brings 5-10cm of snow to the Southern Lakes in the evening and Canterbury overnight. Mt Ruapehu sees rain turning to snow in the afternoon, clearing by evening. Snow showers over the South Island clear gradually on Tuesday, while Mt Ruapehu has heavy snowfall in the afternoon, easing at night.

Wednesday to Friday (18th to 20th September)

Wednesday brings cloudy skies with light snow showers for the Southern Lakes by late afternoon, and strengthening northwesterlies over Canterbury. Mt Ruapehu starts clear but sees cloud and snow showers by late morning. Thursday will see heavier snow in the Southern Lakes, possibly turning to rain on lower slopes. Canterbury experiences strong northwest winds with showers in the evening. Snow turns wet on Mt Ruapehu as temperatures warm. Another front arrives Friday, bringing snow to the South Island and rain to Mt Ruapehu, with strong northwest winds.

Extended Forecast

A weather system is expected this weekend, but its impact remains uncertain. Snowfall in the South Island may turn to rain with warmer northerlies, while conditions clear up over Mt Ruapehu.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
