More Powder on the Way as Storm Cycle Continues

Summary

The Southern Lakes got 20-30cm at base and 50-60cm up top, while Ohau received 50cm and Mt Hutt 15cm. Saturday promises another great day. More snow is expected: 20-25cm for the Southern Lakes on Sunday, a dusting in Canterbury on Monday, and 5-10cm across South Island resorts by Tuesday. Mt Ruapehu will see 20-50cm on Monday and Tuesday, improving conditions.

Short Term Forecast

The Weekend (14th & 15th September)

Saturday will be another great day for the Southern Lakes with clear skies and light winds, while Canterbury remains cloudy with light snow flurries and calm conditions. Mt Ruapehu will experience heavy rain and northwest winds. On Sunday, snow will fall over the Southern Lakes down to 700m, clearing overnight, while Canterbury will have snow showers in the MacKenzie Basin and a few elsewhere. Mt Ruapehu will see showers, with snow at higher elevations, gradually clearing as southwest winds arrive.

Monday to Wednesday (16th to 18th September)

On Monday, snowfall clears Canterbury in the morning, leaving a fine day for South Island resorts with northwest winds, while a strong southerly brings 5-10cm of snow by evening. Mt Ruapehu will have snow lowering below base levels with possible heavy falls. Snow showers clear the South Island on Tuesday, and Mt Ruapehu may see more snow with a strong southerly. Wednesday will be partly cloudy in the South Island, with light snow showers at Mt Ruapehu.

Extended Forecast

A turbulent westerly flow across the country will bring some additional snow next Thursday and Friday, followed by a likely ridge of high pressure moving in over the weekend.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
