Trending Even Deeper Next Week

Summary

Two storms remain on track to absolutely crush the northern side of the Alps over the next week. The second storm has trended stronger over the last 24 hours but a sharp rise in temperatures is still expected at the tail end. The ridge responsible for the warm temperatures will remain over Europe for at least a week, keeping things dry.

Short Term Forecast

Very few changes to the forecast, so this will be a short post. We have two storms on the docket, one later this week and a second starting this weekend, lasting through early next week.

The first storm should bring 25 - 50 cm to the northern Alps, from France through western Austria, with totals up to 40 cm in the northern French Alps.

I'm still expecting 1-1.5 m for much of the region, but some areas in the central Swiss to western Austrian Alps could exceed 2 m. This is an impressive and powerful storm that will create dangerous avalanche conditions. Visibility will be pretty much nonexistent above treeline. Temperatures will be cold, with snow levels falling to just a few hundred meters above sea level before rising later in the storm.

Fortunately, most of the precipitation will be over by the time the warm air arrives, so running shouldn't be an issue. However, avalanche danger will remain high or even become extreme as rapidly rising temperatures follow a huge snowfall.

Extended Forecast

I'll have more details on the first storm in tomorrow's post.

Below is a look at the anomalously strong and anomalously large ridge that will cover nearly the entire continent next week.

That's honestly one of the biggest and strongest ridges I can remember seeing in all of my forecasting.

My next post will be on Wednesday.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
