A Few More Days of Rain and High-Elevation Snow
Summary
A strong Spring storm with heavy rain and high-elevation snow has battered the western Alps this week, and we still have a few more days before this system departs the region. The pattern remains active in the mid and long-range with several weak storms keeping the chances for showers going through much of next week.
Short Term Forecast
The latest storm to impact the Alps started out with heavy snow and cooler temperatures, thanks to the cold air mass the previous storm left behind. During the early part of the week southwest winds slowly mixed out the cooler air and replaced it with a warmer Atlantic airmass, causing snow levels to rise. Still, heavy snow and significant accumulations occurred above 2100 m.
As this latest storm finally starts to slowly move off to the east, it will keep precipitation going in the western Alps and eventually move to the eastern Alps as well later in the week. High-elevation snow with additional accumulations is expected. Cooler air will arrive Thursday night and bring snow levels down to around 1500 - 1800 m.
Below is the European forecast for additional snow from Wednesday night through Sunday.
Next week, additional, albeit weaker, upper-level disturbances will be moving through central Europe that will keep rain and high-elevation snow showers going through much of next week.
Extended Forecast
A stronger and colder storm is possible around the end of next week, with a more easterly track, but I'll hold off on the details for now.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
Next update on Sunday.
