More Snow for Las Lenas, Then a Dry Stretch
Summary
Snow has been coming down at Las Lenas since Wednesday night and will continue on Friday. Some lingering snow showers are possible mainly in the central zone but it won't amount to much. We dry out again for the weekend and the early part of next week before the storm track starts to shift back to the north bringing back chances for snow.
Short Term Forecast
The webcams at Las Lenas yesterday showed heavy snow, as expected, which continued last night as well. The rest of the region saw a mix of clouds and sunshine yesterday. Light to moderate snow will bring an additional 5 - 10 cm to Las Lenas throughout the day.
UPDATE: Las Lenas is reporting 30 cm new snow this (Friday) morning.
This storm will linger off the north Chilean coast but atmospheric moisture will be limited so there won't be much in terms of additional precipitation. Meanwhile, a ridge will move in from the west and initially set up off the southern Chilean coast, putting a stop to the active weather.
This will direct storms south of the region through the middle of next week before the ridge starts to move off to the east. Once that happens, the storm door will reopen around the middle of next week, which you can see in the figure below around seven frames in.
The latest guidance keeps the storm track far enough south that the central and southern zones will be favored. This doesn't look like a major storm at this time but likely a solid refresh in the 10 - 20 cm range for the central zone.
This upper-level forecast shows the ridge moving into the area this weekend, the southerly tracking storm mid-next week, and the possible return to stormy weather around the start of next month at the end of the GIF.
Extended Forecast
In the long range, the models have the storm track shifting further south once again bringing another stretch of dry weather. The ensembles show the next chance for storms around the middle of the following week, in the first few days of August.
