Storms Are Coming, But More Wet Than White to Start
Summary
The end of our extended stretch of dry weather is in sight, but the return of wet weather will start mostly as rain. Cooler air will move in midweek and we'll see a period of accumulating snow later in the week. More dry weather is expected next weekend and early the following week, with a southerly storm track in place.
Short Term Forecast
Several more warm and dry days are on the way while the ridge continues to dominate the region. By Monday night the dry stretch will come to an end, as the first in a series of storms will move through the central Andes. Temperatures will be warm the first few days of this active period, with high snow levels through Wednesday. Cooler air arrives Wednesday night and rain will transition to snow from south to north. Light to moderate snow will continue through Saturday.
Unfortunately, the end of this latest dry stretch will feature rain and not snow. Snow levels will rise above mid-mountain and even the summits of most resorts in the central and southern zones. The north should be spared from this warm phase as it tracks too far south for any real impacts. Moderate to heavy rain will fall from Monday night through Wednesday before the cold front makes its way through. We could see some snow starting to mix in with the rain at upper elevations on Wednesday.
On Wednesday night snow levels will fall and we'll see a transition to snow for the remainder of the active period. The majority of moisture will have fallen during the warm phase of the storm though. Still, we can expect around 15 - 30 cm during this period, as you can see below.
This storm that will bring the cold front through will slowly track further north later in the week, bringing some light to moderate snow to the northern zone in the Saturday to Sunday timeframe, with around 8 - 20 cm possible.
Extended Forecast
After this series of storms wraps up on Saturday, the storm track will shift to the south. The models keep the storms a bit too far south for any impacts, but a small northerly shift in the track could bring some snow over the weekend. Another ridge is showing up in the long-range models to start the following week. Next update on Monday.
