Southern Storm Continues, Dry Stretch Ahead

Summary

The storm system to the south will bring additional snow to the central and southern zones through Thursday. For the latter part of the week and beyond, high pressure will dominate, bringing a prolonged period of dry weather to the region.

Short Term Forecast

Snow has continued in the central zone over the past few days, with modest accumulations. Chapelco reported a 30 cm gain in snow depth on the upper mountain during this time. Snow levels fluctuated at Cerro Catedral at times, with rain mixing in with snow at lower elevations. Still, they recorded 15 cm at the base and 40 cm at the summit as of Tuesday morning.

Cerro Castor near the southern tip of the continent and La Hoya recently opened for the season.

Moderate to heavy snow will continue for the southern part of the central zone through the afternoon, before turning more showery overnight. Some snow showers will linger through Thursday morning. Additional accumulations through Thursday are shown below.

Snow levels have fallen significantly so expect all snow and better snow quality as well.

Extended Forecast

Starting on Thursday a ridge begins to develop off the coast of southern Chile. This feature will strengthen and expand over the next week, standing in the way of any storm from moving into the region. Storms will generally be pushed to the north with little impact on the resorts. One of these storms may bring some snow showers to the northern zone around the middle of next week.

There’s no obvious sign of when this ridge will break down and allow stronger storms to enter the region, but perhaps this may occur around the middle of the month. There’s plenty of time for that to change though so let’s hope we see the ridge break down a bit earlier.

Next update on Friday.
