Warm and Wet, Rainy Phase Continues
Summary
The warm and wet phase of this latest storm will continue on Wednesday. Significant rain is expected through Friday before a cold front this weekend brings snow back into the forecast. The pattern remains active through at least the early part of next week with somewhat colder temperatures.
Short Term Forecast
There's no way to sugarcoat this one. A lot of rain is headed to the resorts in Chile and Argentina over the next few days, particularly in the central and southern zones. A storm lingering off the Chilean coast will direct an atmospheric river into the region. An additional 6 - 12 cm of rain is expected through Friday, with snow levels near or above most resort summits. Less precipitation and higher elevations will result in limited damage in the northern zone, with perhaps minor accumulations at the summits.
The heaviest rain is still expected today, Wednesday, during the daytime hours. Heavy rain continues Wednesday night but will become less intense on Thursday and Friday. Winds will be strong during this time as well.
On Saturday, the storm will finally start moving to the east and over the continent. This will push a cold front through the area as well, bringing moderate to heavy precipitation back and changing rain over to snow. Below you can see the storm lingering off the coast through Friday before finally moving inland on Saturday.
Although temperatures won't get too cold, it should be cold enough for accumulating snow at mid and upper elevations on Saturday and Sunday, with the biggest totals in the northern zone.
Extended Forecast
The storms are lined up beyond the weekend as well, with a potential storm cycle continuing through the middle of the month. Unfortunately, snow levels are expected to rise again early next, turning snow back over to rain. Around the middle of the week, another cold front is possible, but it's a bit too early to get into the details. I'll have more details on the cooler/snowy weekend period on Friday.
