A Break from the Unruly Spring Pattern

Summary

Most South Island resorts remained closed Thursday due to strong winds and rain, followed by icy conditions. The Remarkables saw 2cm at the base and 16cm up high. Mt Ruapehu is experiencing heavy rain, with snow possible as conditions improve. Southwest winds will bring sunshine and warmer temperatures this weekend, with calm weather expected Monday.

Short Term Forecast

Friday to Monday (27th to 30th September)

Brisk, icy southwest winds on Friday will bring clouds and light snow showers to the Southern Lakes and Mt Hutt, while Canterbury will remain mostly sunny. Mt Ruapehu will see rain turning to snow briefly, followed by partly cloudy skies. The weekend will be mostly fine across the South Island with some clouds, while strong winds ease and temperatures warm. Mt Ruapehu will have a mix of sunshine, some clouds, and light snow showers. Monday will be sunny for all resorts, with northwest winds picking up in the South Island and calm, sunny conditions at Mt Ruapehu.

Extended Forecast

A storm system from the Tasman Sea is expected to impact the country starting late Tuesday, bringing warm, wet weather with strong northerly winds. Cold air moving in by Wednesday or Thursday will likely turn the rain to snow. The South Island may receive moderate to heavy snowfall, with a lighter amount for Mt Ruapehu. Monday's forecast should provide more clarity.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
