Rain, Snow & Severe Winds Ahead as Storm Cycle Reboots

Summary

Expect rough weather ahead with strong winds, heavy rain, and snow showers over the next few days, bringing disruptions to many resorts, especially on Saturday.

Short Term Forecast

Friday (6th September)

The South Island will have partly cloudy skies with a few light showers in the Southern Lakes and MacKenzie Basin, while strong northwesterly winds blow in exposed regions. Rain will move north by night. Mt Ruapehu resorts will begin with clear skies, but cloud cover will lift to resort level by afternoon, bringing light drizzle as southwesterly winds strengthen.

The weekend (7th & 8th September)

Saturday will be a rough day for the South Island as a front brings heavy rain to the Southern Lakes in the morning and Canterbury in the afternoon, with severe gale northwesterly winds shifting to cooler westerlies. Snow showers will develop in the Southern Lakes by afternoon and lightly in Canterbury by evening. Mt Ruapehu will have a grey, drizzly day, with strong westerlies rising to severe gale by night.

Sunday starts clear for the South Island, with another front bringing snow showers in the afternoon to the Southern Lakes and in the evening to Canterbury. Winds will strengthen, and snow will turn wet on the lower slopes. Mt Ruapehu will see partial clouds with occasional light snow flurries.

Monday and Tuesday (9th & 10th September)

On Monday, the South Island will experience rain and high-elevation snow, with heavy falls possible and strong northwesterly winds reaching gale force in exposed areas and severe gale in Canterbury. Mt Ruapehu will see increasing clouds and afternoon showers as westerly winds shift northwest and strengthen.

Intense westerly winds will persist on Tuesday, delivering additional rain and snow showers to the resorts.

Extended Forecast

Showers will clear by Wednesday, followed by a weak southerly change on Thursday that brings a fresh layer of snow, with Canterbury expected to see the most benefit.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
