Storm Still Spins In the South
Summary
A strong upper-level low continues to spin through the Mediterranean near Spain, bringing additional snow to the Pyrenees and northern Apennines as it drifts toward the Atlantic. Snow will linger through at least Wednesday as this system slowly retrograde across southern Europe. Finally, the upper level returns to a more progressive west-to-east flow with a weak storm possible over the weekend.
Short Term Forecast
This storm has already brought significant snow to many mountain ranges in western Europe, and its impacts will be felt for several more days. Cut off from the upper-level flow, it is slowly drifting west across the Mediterranean toward the Atlantic, providing enough moisture and lift to keep snow showers going in certain parts of the region. The upper-level pattern from Monday through Saturday is shown below.
The timing and location of additional rain and snow showers from this storm are shown below.
The additional snow expected through Saturday from the European model is shown below.
A weaker storm favoring the central/eastern Alps is possible this weekend, but the models are a bit inconsistent on just how much snow may fall. Overall though, it looks like a minor event with less than 20 cm total expected.
Extended Forecast
Around the middle of next week, the models agree on a stronger upper-level low arriving from the north. However, the latest guidance is split on whether it tracks through the western Alps or Eastern Alps. We will have to give the models a few more days to sort this out.
My next post will be on Wednesday.
