Two Small Storms, A Potentially Bigger Storm Next Weekend
Summary
Two small storms will bring moderate snow totals to the western and eastern Alps, respectively, this week. The second storm has the potential to deliver some bigger totals to the southern Alps starting this weekend, but the models still disagree on the track.
Short Term Forecast
Two storms remain on track this week, with the possibility of something bigger next week. The forecast details remain unchanged since yesterday, with a smaller storm for the western Alps early this week and a slightly bigger, but still small, storm for the eastern Alps later in the week. These storms will bring 5 - 15 cm to the western Alps and 15 - 30 cm to the eastern Alps, respectively. A cut-off low moving west to east just south of the Alps has the potential to deliver some bigger totals to the southern Alps.
Check the previous forecast for the details on the two smaller storms this week.
Over the last twenty-four hours, the models have been struggling to resolve the cut-off upper-level low. The European model now only takes the low as far west as Italy before starting its eastward progression. Check out the differences in these model runs.

Meanwhile, the American model has a secondary low developing in the lee of the Alps over Italy that then combines with the original low before crossing the Alps south to north. The bottom line is not only are there major model differences, but significant changes are evident even from run to run.
Extended Forecast
The models definitely need more time to sort out the pattern for later this week into the weekend. In the long-range, the models show a return to active weather and stronger storms. However, some tend to favor a storm track through the western Alps while others favor the east. Overall it’s a positive development but too far out to get specific.
Next post on Tuesday.
