Heaviest Snow Over, Showers Continue
Summary
Although the main thump of snow from the second storm in this cycle is over, snow showers will continue through Saturday morning in the northwestern Alps. We'll dry out from Saturday afternoon through Monday before a weak system arrives Monday night. Overall, a warming trend is expected next week.
Short Term Forecast
We've seen another day of heavy snowfall, and the western Alps are looking good. Cervinia has seen another 45 cm at lower elevations, with 30 cm down low in the Valle d'Aosta. A few shots from those areas are below.
Snow showers will continue in the western Alps through Saturday morning, with 5 - 15 cm expected.
As you can see below, we'll dry out and warm up as a ridge develops in southwestern Europe.
Although the storm track will be well north of the Alps, the cold front associated with a storm moving through the British Isles and Scandinavia will bring some showers to the western Alps on Monday evening through Tuesday.
Extended Forecast
During the middle of next week, a strong high pressure will develop in the northeast Atlantic. The models are hinting at an upper-level low dropping down on the east side of this ridge, bringing some moderate snow to the eastern Alps before closing off and retrograding across the Alps as the ridge expands over northern Europe. This retrograding closed low could bring some snow to the southern Alps but its too early to get into details.
Next post on Sunday.
