Storm Totals of 25-50cms Expected Tuesday to Friday

Summary

Fine weather today precedes a long-awaited snowstorm arriving from the west, bringing 25–40cm of snow to the Australian Alps from Tuesday to Friday, with over 50cm possible at higher elevations. Strong northwest winds will redistribute snow to upper slopes, with most snowfall expected during two fronts, especially the stronger one on Thursday.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 7th July

Monday will start clear in New South Wales, but cloud cover will increase across the Australian Alps later in the day as easing southerlies shift to a northwesterly flow.

Forecast for Tuesday 8th July

On Tuesday, snow showers above 1600m will move east across Victoria and New South Wales, with gale northerly winds and heavier snowfall later as snow levels drop to around 1300m before clearing at night.

Forecast for Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th July

Wednesday starts cloudy with light snow increasing throughout the day and heavier snowfall at night as northwesterly winds shift northwards. Thursday brings heavy snow and blizzard conditions easing by evening, followed by Friday’s cloudy skies with light snow showers in the west and strong, gusty winds turning wet at low levels.

Extended Forecast

Throughout the upcoming week, the Southern Ocean will stay busy with rapidly moving storm systems heading east. Beginning Sunday, these systems are likely to bring regular cold fronts and intermittent snowfall to the Australian Alps every few days.
