Small Storm Tue/Wed, The Dry for Another Week
Summary
A small storm is expected to bring some minor accumulation to the mountains this week, but the dry pattern will return later in the week. The ridge will build back in later this week and keep any storms out of the region through at least Wednesday of next week. There are some signs of a pattern change around Thursday of next week.
Short Term Forecast
It's been dry of late in the Andes, and that pattern will persist, for the most part, through the middle of next week. Some minor accumulation is possible over the next two days as a weak storm crosses the continent, but it won't amount to much.
Below is how the American model predicts the storm will unfold.
You can see some light snow in all three zones, from Monday night through Wednesday, with the most consistent precipitation in the central zone, where up to 10 cm is possible.
Following this weak storm, another ridge will develop over South America, this time centered over the southern tip of the continent. Below you can see the weak storm coming on shore at the beginning of the GIF, followed by the ridge developing over southern South America.
Finally, at the end of the GIF, you can see a storm approaching Chile from the south.
Extended Forecast
The models are in decent agreement that a more active pattern will develop later next week, but it's too early for specifics.
My next post will be on Wednesday or Thursday.

NEW: Forecast Range Graphs
You can now view individual forecasts from global and regional high-resolution weather models in OpenSnow. This includes forecasts from the GFS, ECMWF, HRRR, and ICON models, as well as the OpenSnow blend.
The graphs give you a behind-the-scenes look at the forecast and make it easier to see if the forecast models are in tight agreement or if there is a wide range of potential outcomes over the next 10 days.
Note: This is currently only available in the OpenSnow iOS app and website (OpenSnow.com). Android will be available soon.
Getting Started
- Go to any location screen.
- Scroll down under "Weather" or "Snow Summary".
- Tap "View Interactive Chart" in the app.
- Adjust the model, timeframe, or data view.
Why is the Forecast Range helpful?
Understand if there is high or low confidence in the forecast. If all models show a similar forecast, there is higher confidence in the forecast, and vice versa.
Dig into the details. If you have experience looking at weather model data and trust certain models or higher-resolution models, you'll be able to isolate your favorite data.
