Spring Snow This Weekend

Summary

The spring skiing has been soft and sunny of late but stormy conditions return this weekend. A solid round of snow is expected in the central zone, and with several resorts still open, you can score a few more powder turns. A warmer system is possible next week as well.

Short Term Forecast

The South American ski season rolls on as we move into the middle of October, with Valle Nevado, Corralco, Volcan Osorno, Antillanca, and Chapelco (closing 10/13) still open this weekend. After one more warm and dry day a moist system will move in on Thursday.

Warm air will be in place as this storm gets underway, with mainly across the resorts except for maybe the highest elevations. Temperatures start to cool Thursday night and we'll transition to snow from top to bottom by Thursday morning. Light to moderate snow will continue on Friday and linger through Saturday in the southern part of the central zone. In this southern section expect totals in the 15 - 30 cm range with 10 - 20 cm further north near Corralco.

The latest snow forecast from ther European model is shown below.

This storm will clear out on Saturday and things should stay dry through the middle of next week.

Extended Forecast

A warmer storm is possible arriving around Wedneasday of next week. Right now this is looking like mainly a rain event with the chance for a transition to snow toward the end of the week, but its a bit too early to nail down those details.

Next update on Friday.
