Stormy Weather Returns

Summary

A few rounds of snow are on tap for the latter part of the week with the biggest impacts in the central and southern zones. This storm will track too far south for any impacts in the northern zone. After a break early next week, more storms are possible with the northern zone more likely to get in on the action.

Short Term Forecast

One more dry day is in store on Wednesday ahead of the next storm system set to arrive on Wednesday night. This will be the first in a series of moderate storms that will bring accumulating snow to the central and southern zones.

Warm air will still be hanging around as the storm arrives later tonight, but a cold front will soon lower snow levels. There may be a brief period of rain at resort bases but it should be all snow by Thursday morning. The heaviest snow will fall on Wednesday night in the southern part of the central zone, lingering into Thursday morning. In the northern part of the central zone, light snow will fall Wednesday night becoming heavier in the morning.

This first round of snow will wrap up on Thursday, leaving 10 - 20 cm across most of the central zone. The latest forecast from the European model is below.

The break will be short-lived though as the next storm moves in Friday morning. Temperatures will be cold from the previous storm so snow levels won't be an issue. Expect moderate snow in the southern part of the central zone Friday morning becoming heavier in the evening. This storm is tracking a bit farther south and will bring heavier snow to the southern part of the central zone.

In this region, another 15 - 40 cm by Saturday night when the snow tapers off. In the northern part of the central zone, < 15 cm is expected, decreasing to the north. Below is the latest forecast for round two.

We'll dry out later Sunday and stay that way through Tuesday.

Extended Forecast

Another round of storms is possible starting around the middle of next week. The models are still not in agreement about the arrival of this storm, but it should be sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. As mentioned, this round of storms should track farther north bringing snow back to the northern zone in addition to the central zone.

The models also disagree on how long this active period will last. The deterministic models bring more storms in later next week through the weekend, while the ensembles turn the faucet off at the end of the week.

Next update on Friday.
