Closing Weekend Dump

Summary

The models have not only kept the potential storm for closing weekend, but have trended stronger. A legitimate cold and deep very late season storm is on track to bring a few more powder days.

Short Term Forecast

Don't put the fast skis and powder boards away just yet, powder hounds. Or if you did, it's time to take them down for one last hurrah. This storm has mid-winter like cold air and impressive moisture, and the models are in good agreement on this highly anomalous and strong storm. Check out the average temperature anomaly for the five days ending 10/31 below.

These temperature are well below normal for this time of year.

You can see the winter like cold are arriving via a strong cold front later next week as well.

Winds are going to be very strong, and with this much snow, I am a bit concerned about what Corralco and Volcan Osorno will be able to get open. Further, this storm will start on Friday and likely linger through at least Monday, which won't give resorts time to do much avalanche mitigation prior to the season closing dates.

Perhaps this storm, with the potential to bring 1-1.5 m of snow, will cause some Corralco or Volcan Osorno to extend their seasons, or perhaps others to consider reopening.

I will leave it there, for now, and have an update for you on Wednesday.

I will be posting a season recap soon, and would love to share any photos you got throughout the year. Email them to me at [email protected].
