Some Rain & Snow Thursday & Friday to Break Up a Settled Week
Summary
New Zealand ski fields opened under clear skies and calm winds. Mt Hutt delayed opening due to rain, but coverage was solid. Southern Lakes had limited snow, with groomers in good shape. Fine weather holds through Wednesday, with snow likely Friday into Saturday.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th June
Monday will be mostly sunny across South Island ski areas, though Canterbury may see some cloud with an easterly breeze. Cold conditions will keep snow-making in action.
Tuesday brings calm, clear skies across all fields, with more crisp temperatures ideal for snow production.
Wednesday continues the settled run with sunshine and light northwesterlies building. Another cold start will allow snow guns to fire early.
Forecast for Thursday 19th & Friday 20th June
A front crossing from the west on Thursday will bring wet conditions to South Island ski areas, with snow likely on the upper slopes of the Southern Lakes. As the day progresses, the precipitation will ease to isolated showers while snow levels gradually lower. Blustery north to northwest winds may strengthen to gale force in exposed parts of Canterbury, potentially limiting lift access.
Friday sees a cold southerly wind sweeping northward, with snow likely in the Southern Lakes from the morning and pushing into Canterbury later in the day. Light falls may continue into the night, especially on higher terrain.
Extended Forecast
Snow showers will linger into the early hours of Saturday, June 21st. Fresh snowfall will create ideal conditions for the weekend, which should mostly be dry and stable as a high-pressure ridge moves through. However, next week looks unsettled, with rain expected to dominate over snow.
Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out early Wednesday.
