More Snow to Come in the Final Days of the Season

Summary

South Island resorts got a snow top-up on Tuesday, with Canterbury receiving 10cm and the Southern Lakes 3-7cm. More light snow is expected Wednesday, followed by finer weather Thursday and Friday. The final weekend will bring more snow, with Canterbury expecting 10-20cm on Sunday. Mt Ruapehu will see 5-15cm on Thursday, with calm conditions through Friday.

Short Term Forecast

Wednesday to Friday (9th to 11th October)

Light snow will continue over the Southern Lakes on Wednesday, clearing by evening as westerly winds turn southwest. In Canterbury, gale northwesterlies will push snow to Mt Olympus and possibly Mt Hutt, with another light dusting expected in the evening. Mt Ruapehu will see rain turn to snow, leaving 5-10cm by evening, but strong winds have closed Whakapapa for the day. Thursday will be fine for the Southern Lakes and Canterbury as cold breezes ease. Mt Ruapehu will have a light snow day, with 5-15cm expected. Friday brings cloudy weather to the Southern Lakes, sunny skies for Canterbury, and light snow showers for Mt Ruapehu.

The Weekend (12th and 13th October)

This will be the final weekend of the season for South Island resorts. Whakapapa and Turoa on Mt Ruapehu will keep the upper slopes running for another couple of weekends.

On Saturday, the Southern Lakes will see a few afternoon snow showers, but otherwise, it will be mostly sunny with strong northwest winds in exposed areas. Mt Ruapehu will stay fine until afternoon snow showers arrive as southwest winds strengthen. Sunday will bring light southerlies and snow showers to the Southern Lakes, with heavier snowfall in Canterbury. Mt Ruapehu may also see more snow showers as westerly winds turn northwest.

Extended Forecast

Friday will be the final forecast for the season.
