Not A Lot Going On

Summary

We’re entering a quiet stretch of weather across the Alps and Pyrenees, with no storms expected over the next ten days. There are some signs that a strong storm may impact the Alps and Pyrenees around the 27th.ial

Short Term Forecast

There's not a lot to talk about today as the latest storm has south of the Alps and is now brining some snow to the Appenines in Italy. A ridge will quickly develop over central Europe and take hold for much of the next week to ten days. The storm track will be pushed to the east of the Alps during this time, and as the first storm dropping down on the leeward side of the ridge passes by, we could see some light snow in the eastern Austrian Alps.

Let's take a quick look at what the ensembles are showing for the end of the month. All three ensembles models show a storm over southwest Europe around the 27th. This would initially bring snow to the Pyrenees and then the Alps is it moves further inland. These storms tend to feature some warm air since they're coming off the Atlantic Ocean.

Although the ensembles agree, the signal is not overly strong. This is the more likely scenario for that time frame but I am not ready to lock it in.

My next post will be on Sunday.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!

NEW: Forecast Snowfall Maps

Visualize the snow forecast in 2D or 3D for the next 6, 12, and 24 hours, along with total snowfall for the next 10 days, for any location in the United States and southern Canada.

The maps are made with our internal blend of high-resolution weather forecast data, including our proprietary snow-to-liquid ratio algorithm that is specifically made for complex, mountain terrain.

Getting Started

  1. Tap the "Maps" tab.
  2. Tap the overlay button.
  3. Tap "Forecast Snowfall".
  4. Scrub the bottom slider.

What are the main use cases for the forecast snowfall maps?

Get an easy-to-use visualization of the snow forecast for your favorite locations, check the timing of upcoming storms to catch the deepest turns or to avoid snowy road conditions, and see which ski resorts are favored for the deepest snow totals.

Are there any limitations to the forecast snowfall maps?

The forecast snowfall maps count "mixed precipitation" as "snow" so the maps could show more snow in areas that are getting sleet or freezing rain, along with where the rain/snow line is difficult to forecast. Double-check any location by tapping the map for the forecast details.
