Retour d'est and More Southern Alps Snow
Summary
Last week's equal opportunity storm buried parts of the northern and southern Alps with up to 1.5 m of fresh snow. The good news for the southern Alps continues as a Retour d'est will bring another round of heavy snow through Sunday evening. It looks like we'll dry out next week and into the second week of the month.
Short Term Forecast
The southern Alps continue to make up for lost time, with another storm favoring the region through the weekend. A solid Retour d'est will keep the action going in the southern Alps of Italy and Switzerland, as well as the eastern and northern facing aspects of the southwestern Italian Alps.
This storm will continue through Sunday afternoon and drop an additional 25 - 50 cm across much of the southern Alps, with totals dropping closer to the inner alpine area. The airmass is not overly cold, but snow levels should stay below 1200 m. The Cuneo and Torino regions of Italy should do best with this setup.
After this storm weakens, a ridge will develop over northwest Europe. This will put a stop to any storms coming from the west through most of next week.
Extended Forecast
As the ridge strengthens over northern Europe later this week, a weak storm will sneak down into central Europe. With the size and strength of this upper-level ridge, this weak storm will become cut off from the upper-level flow and strengthen a bit. We could see some moderate to heavy snow this weekend, favoring the southern Alps once again.
There is the potential for a period of very heavy snow in the southern Alps in Austria if the cut-off low sets up just off the northwestern Alps. A strong southerly flow with moisture off the Mediterranean would hammer this region. The location of cut-off lows is tricky to pinpoint, so the location of this heavy snow could shift farther west to a different area of the southern Alps, or even farther east, missing the Alps entirely. We will have to keep a close eye on this one.
My next post will be on Friday.

NEW: Forecast Snowfall Maps
Visualize the snow forecast in 2D or 3D for the next 6, 12, and 24 hours, along with total snowfall for the next 10 days, for any location in the United States and southern Canada.
The maps are made with our internal blend of high-resolution weather forecast data, including our proprietary snow-to-liquid ratio algorithm that is specifically made for complex, mountain terrain.
Getting Started
- Tap the "Maps" tab.
- Tap the overlay button.
- Tap "Forecast Snowfall".
- Scrub the bottom slider.
What are the main use cases for the forecast snowfall maps?
Get an easy-to-use visualization of the snow forecast for your favorite locations, check the timing of upcoming storms to catch the deepest turns or to avoid snowy road conditions, and see which ski resorts are favored for the deepest snow totals.
Are there any limitations to the forecast snowfall maps?
The forecast snowfall maps count "mixed precipitation" as "snow" so the maps could show more snow in areas that are getting sleet or freezing rain, along with where the rain/snow line is difficult to forecast. Double-check any location by tapping the map for the forecast details.
