Slight Western Trend

Summary

Heavy snow fell Saturday night and Sunday with widespread accumulations in the 15 - 30 cm range. This storm is still pumping out snow and will won’t be finished until Wednesday, though there are some indications that a westward trend will decrease totals in western Austria while increasing them in France.

Short Term Forecast

Widespread totals of 15 - 30 cm had piled up as of late last night, with areas like Englenberg and Engstilgenalp and L’Ecrueluel approaching 50 cm.

We saw a bit of a lull on Sunday as winds shifted more to the west due to the trough broadening as it moved into the Alps. This will bump up totals farther west, in the part of the Alps that faces more west, and will reduce totals in the northern Alls.

The winds will return to a more northwesterly direction, and when that happens, snow will become heavy again in the Austrian Alps. Below is the latest update from the high-res model showing additional accumulation from 1 PM Sunday.

I am still expecting a weak wave to bring a period of light snow on Thursday, but no more than 10 cm above is expected.

Extended Forecast

After that weak little wave on Wednesday we warm up and dry our. We should stay dry through the end of the month, with the next potential storm around January 2nd.

My next post will be on Tuesday.
