Winter Is Coming Back Soon

Summary

After a brief break from the snowy and stormy Spring, Winter is set to return early next week. A fast moving storm will bring heavy snow to the western Alps and Pyrenees. Warm weather returns for several days before another round of snow is possible next weekend.

Short Term Forecast

I hope you enjoyed the recent break and Spring conditions because at least a few more rounds of Winter are expected in the next ten days. Before we get to the first of two potential snow storms we have a few more warm and dry days on tap for Sunday and Monday.

Snow returns to the Alps on Tuesday morning and will continue through Thursday morning. This storm will get started even earlier in the Pyrenees. Overall the temperatures will be on the warm side, with snow levels starting high. A cold front moving through starting Tuesday afternoon will bring snow levels down significantly.

Winds will start out from the southwest favoring the southern French Alps, but as the upper-level low becomes cut off from the prevailing flow, we'll then see southerly winds on the southern side of the Alps and northwest winds on the northern side. This will spread the snow out pretty evenly across all of the Alps, as you can see in the latest snow forecast from the European model below.

On the high end, at upper elevations, totals in parts of the French, Swiss, Italian, and Austrian Alps should wind up between 15 - 30 cm. We'll see a return to warm Spring-like conditions from Friday through Monday.

Extended Forecast

Around Tuesday of next week, the models show another storm system moving through the Alps. This storm will come from the north, but the models disagree on the exact track right now, with some solutions having the storm track making it much farther south. For now, we can expect another round of wintry weather next week but we'll need a few more days to fine-tune the details.
