Intense Storm Hammers the Southern Alps
Summary
A series of strong storms is bringing very heavy snowfall to parts of the Alps and Pyrenees, and that will continue through the early part of next week. Most of the Alps will get in on the action to some degree, but the southern Alps in Italy will be hit hardest. Once this storm wraps up on Tuesday a break in the action is expected for the rest of the week.
Short Term Forecast
The southern Alps have been on a magical run lately, with big storm after big storm for weeks. The snowpack at mid and upper elevations in the southern Alps is really deep and more snow is being added to that as we speak.
The latest storm cycle to hammer the southern Alps is underway, and it’s nuking in Italian Alps and along the French/Swiss/Italian border. This will continue through Monday morning for many areas. Snowfall rates of 2.5 - 5 cm per hour will be possible for much of this time, especially at mid and upper elevations.
Visibility will be near nothing, avalanche danger will be high, and mountain operations will certainly be affected. The alpine areas in these regions may not open until Tuesday.
Snow totals between 1 - 2 meters are possible through Tuesday.
Elsewhere, the storm won’t be as intense, but some decent snow totals are expected. Snow totals will decrease farther east and west in the southern Alps, but significant totals are expected there as well.
On the northern side, this will be more of a light to moderate snow event, but totals over several days will be respectable. Expect 20 - 40 cms in the northern French Alps and 10 - 20 cms farther east on the northern side.
Additional snow totals through Wednesday are shown below.
Extended Forecast
A break in the action is still on track for the middle and latter part of next week. Upper-level ridging will send the storm track to the north and keep things warm and dry. Stormy weather could return as early as Monday of the following week. Additional rounds of snow will be possible.
