Watching the Weekend

Summary

A strong and cold storm is on tap for this weekend, starting on Saturday and continuing through Tuesday. Solid totals in the 15 - 30 cm range are expected for most of the northern Alps, though the Swiss and central Austrian Alps should do best. The pattern remains active later next week with more chances for snow.

Short Term Forecast

We have one more round of showers to work through on Thursday before we get to our weekend storm on Saturday. Expect 5 - 15 cms for the northern elevations of the northern Alps from Switzerland through Austria.

The forecast for the weekend storm remains on track. A solid thump of quality snow will hit the northern Alps through Monday. Most of the snow will fall as the cold front is crossing the Alps, so snow levels will be low and so will the snow density. Winds don't look too bad with this storm.

While all of the northern Alps will see solid snow totals, the northern Swiss and central Austrian Alps should receive the most snow, perhaps in the 20 - 5 cm range.

Below is the latest snow forecast from the European model.

Extended Forecast

There won't be much of a break as the next system arrives on Tuesday. This storm will favor the western Alps and bring moderate to heavy snow with solid accumulations through Thursday. While the next upper-level low develops west of the region, a strong ridge builds in over eastern Europe. This could limit how close the upper-level low gets to the Alps and Pyrenees and thus the impacts as well. It will be a bit of a battle between these two strong features and will determine whether storms will be able to reach central Europe. More details next time.
