More Showers and a Cold Storm This Weekend

Summary

Another fast-moving round of showers will impact the northern Alps on Thursday. A cold, strong storm remains on track for the weekend. A quick follow-up round of showers is possible early next week, ahead of a strong upper-level low developing in the Atlantic west of France. This feature could bring an extended period of snow, especially in the western Alps.

Short Term Forecast

We'll have one more round of rain and snow showers on Thursday lasting into Friday morning. This quick-hitter will favor the northern Alps, especially in Switzerland, with 10 - 20 cms expected and generally 5 - 10 cms in northern France and western Austria. The latest snow forecast from the European model is below.

Friday should stay dry with the next strong and cold storm getting underway on Saturday morning. The models have trended farther west with this storm over the last few days, spreading out the snow totals more evenly across the northern Alps. Precipitation will begin with the arrival of the cold front on Saturday, so snow levels shouldn't be an issue.

The temperatures will remain cool throughout the duration of the event, which should continue through Tuesday morning. Storm totals should wind up in the 25 - 50 cm range in the high elevations of the northern French, Swiss, and central Austrian Alps. Winds will be primarily out of the northwest, as expected during a Nordweststau, with the favored areas seeing the most snow. The latest snow forecast from the European model for this storm is shown below.

Another quick round of snow showers is possible from Tuesday to Wednesday that could add an additional 5 - 10 cms across the norther Alps.

Extended Forecast

The models have remained consistent with the pattern change in the long range. A strong, upper-level area of low pressure is expected to develop in the Atlantic off the French coast around Wednesday the 27th. The models keep this feature around through the end of the month before it retrogrades back out into the Atlantic. Before that, several storms are expected to rotate around the bottom of the upper-level low and move into the western Alps. A long-duration snow event is possible with this setup.
