Storms on Storms on Storms

Summary

Showers continue on Sunday morning as our next system approaches and gets underway in the Pyrenees. Heavy snow returns to the Alps on Sunday afternoon, and will likely keep going in parts of the Alps through Thursday. Another strong storm is possible as early as Friday.

Short Term Forecast

On Sunday showers will continue in the southern Alps while the next significant storm brings heavy snow back to the Pyrenees. Later in the day, this storm will reach the Alps, kicking off a period of heavy snow in France. This storm will take a southerly track and slowly drift eastward over the course of the week, keeping heavy snow possible for different parts of the southern Alps during that time.

The details of our next storm remain on track from yesterday's forecast. Big snow totals are headed for the Pyrenees and southern Alps. You can see how the storm will play out below, including the timing and locations of the heavy snow.

As the storm progresses eastward, the heaviest shifts farther and farther south. There will be powder days each day from Monday through Thursday, starting with the southern French Alps, including the Alpes-Maritimes and the Cuneo region of Italy. The attention then shifts a bit, over to the eastern side of the southern Italian Alps on Tuesday. For Wednesday and Thursday, the deepest areas will once again be on the eastern-facing side of the western Alps in Italy.

Below is the latest snow forecast through Thursday from the European model. We're still looking at huge totals of .5 - 1.5 m of snow for a large part of the Alps and Pyrenees.

There will be a lot of snow in these favored regions over the next five days. Temperatures start cool (snow levels ~ 900 - 1200 m) but will moderate starting on Tuesday, eventually rising to around 1500 - 1800 m. As a result, snow will be on the denser side, especially later in the storm. The best snow of the storm will be on Monday and Tuesday in the southwestern Alps of Italy and France.

Extended Forecast

The models continue to show a storm approaching the Alps from the northwest on Friday. They don't agree, however, in how far into the Alps the upper-level low tracks, and thus differ on impacts as well. We'll need more time to see how this plays out, but another strong storm is possible.
