Season to start with a solid snow storm

Summary

Only four days remain until the season begins. Resorts have received a light snowfall from the recent cold front, and snowmaking has continued overnight. This weekend, a stronger storm from the southwest is expected from Friday night through Wednesday, bringing challenging conditions but likely delivering 40 to 60 cm of fresh snow for an excellent start to the season.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th June: Snow Guns Fire as Storm Approaches

Snow machines are expected to operate throughout most of the day Wednesday, as cold southerly winds continue to keep temperatures low. If daytime temperatures rise, snowmaking will likely resume overnight. Light snow showers may develop in Victoria, mainly affecting Baw Baw.

A ridge of high pressure will bring clear conditions on Thursday, but overnight temperatures should still allow for snowmaking.

By Friday, winds from the northwest will intensify as a storm system moves in from the southwest, becoming strong by the evening.

Forecast for Opening Weekend, the 7th & 8th June: Season Starter Storm Hits

A southwest storm is forecast to arrive Friday night and last through Opening Weekend, creating difficult conditions at times but delivering essential early-season snowfall. Resorts are expected to receive 25 to 45 cm of snow, with Mt Baw Baw likely to get 5 to 15 cm. The most substantial snow is anticipated from early Saturday through Sunday morning, mainly at elevations of 1300–1400 meters, accompanied by strong northwest winds. As Sunday continues, snow showers should persist while snow levels drop to around 1100–1200 meters, and winds become lighter, possibly allowing for brief periods of improved weather.

Extended Forecast

The storm is forecast to continue into the beginning of next week, with steady snowfall anticipated on both Monday and Tuesday, June 9th and 10th. Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday, June 11th. Although snow levels may rise during this period, they should generally remain below the base elevations of the resorts for most of the snowfall. Early projections indicate that resorts could see an additional 10–30 cm of snow, which would supplement the Opening Weekend snow accumulation and help establish a solid base for what currently appears to be a more settled second half of the week.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out Friday.
