Snow to Sneak in Amongst Wild & Windy Conditions

Summary

The Australian Alps will face wet and windy conditions as fronts move through next week. The first front hits late Friday, affecting the snowpack outside of operating hours. The second arrives Sunday with heavy rain and warm winds, but colder air Sunday night will drop 5-10+ cm of snow above 1600m by Monday, helping to repair some of the damage.

Short Term Forecast

Friday & Saturday (23rd & 24th August)

The day will be mostly fine on Friday, with high clouds and strong northwest winds. However, Victoria may experience mountain fog in the early morning. Rain is expected to move eastward over the Aussie Alps by the evening.

Rain will taper off early in the morning on Saturday, leading to clearing skies and a sunny afternoon as the gale-force northwest winds gradually diminish.

Sunday to Tuesday (25th to 27th August)

Showers will start to develop on Sunday, transitioning to heavy rain in the afternoon as northwesterly winds increase to gale or severe gale strength. By night, the rain will lessen to showers, and snow levels will drop to about 1600m.

Monday will have showers, initially bringing snow down to 1500-1600m. This will gradually decrease in the afternoon as snow levels rise to higher elevations. Gale-force westerly winds will also begin to ease in the afternoon, shifting to the northwest.

Leftover showers will eventually dry up on Tuesday, but once again, northwesterlies will strengthen to gale force.

Extended Forecast

Next week will bring a series of fronts with very strong winds and frequent precipitation starting Wednesday. Expect a mix of rain and snow as temperatures fluctuate, with upper slopes seeing decent snowfall and lower slopes experiencing more variable conditions.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
