December 2024 Snowpack Update

The snowpack across the Western US is doing "okay". Areas along the West Coast are outperforming regions further inland thanks to a train of storms in mid-December. The Intermountain West will need to wait until at least late December for significant storms to return.

The map below shows the percentage of snowpack compared to the 1991-2020 median snowpack for December 15, 2024.

Red is well below normal, yellow and green are below to near normal, and blue is well above normal. This map is based on the weight of the snow on the ground, measured by automated backcountry weather stations called SNOTEL.
