Series of fronts on the way, cooler temps may bring snow to higher levels

Summary

With high pressure in control, today is set to be the week's best day. In the next few days, a series of fronts carried by strong westerly winds will bring wet, mild, and windy weather to the Aussie Alps. This will affect the snowpack, though cooler temperatures may bring some snow to higher elevations late Wednesday and Thursday.

Short Term Forecast

Monday (19th August)

New South Wales resorts will enjoy a sunny day, while those in Victoria will experience partly cloudy skies with a chance of light afternoon showers. A light northwest breeze will shift to the north.

Tuesday to Thursday (20th to 22nd August)

Expect a largely overcast day on Tuesday, with rain showers across Victoria and possibly a few in New South Wales. Northwest winds will intensify, hitting gale force in exposed areas by evening.

Wednesday will remain wet, with intermittent rain and drizzle, eventually changing to snow above 1800m by the evening. Strong northwesterly winds will reach gale force in exposed parts of New South Wales in the morning.

Rain and drizzle will fall on Thursday, turning to snow around 1800m, before clearing in the afternoon, but strong northwesterly winds will continue throughout the day.

Friday (23rd August)

A high-pressure system will lead to mostly clear weather on Friday as westerly winds gradually weaken.

Extended Forecast

Northwest winds are expected to grow stronger over the weekend as a few more fronts bring additional rain showers.

A slight cool down on Monday might result in some snow at higher elevations, but the most promising chance for snow looks to be later next week, as models suggest a colder and snowier finish to an otherwise disappointing August. Let’s hope for the best!

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
