High Pressure Gradually Taking Control

Summary

Our storm was largely a disappointment, but a few areas finally picked up some better totals Monday evening and overnight. High pressure is going to gradually take control once a trough brushes northern Utah through midweek. The weekend looks mostly sunny and warm.

Update

Monday was a somewhat frustrating day.

When awoke Monday morning, I wasn't thrilled with what I saw in terms of the storm. If you read Monday morning's post, you probably got that vibe, and I downgraded my expected storm totals from 7-14" to 5-10". Still, I thought snow would pick up through the day and the afternoon could be good. It just didn't happen. A few stops and starts to snow showers. But otherwise, poor visibility and only an inch or two of fresh snow on the ground.

I was really hoping for some fresh turns and was frustrated with the weather.

Of course, as soon as lifts stopped spinning in LCC at 4pm, the heavy snow started falling. This heavy snow continued off and on until past midnight. Alta-Collins picked up an impressive 1.25" of liquid precip since 4pm yesterday for a storm total of 1.5".  Believe it or not, that's actually above the storm forecast from Sunday! However, it's thick snow -- likely graupel -- they are only reported 8" of new snow in the past 24 hours and 10" storm totals. I am hoping today is going to be fun, surfy snow in LCC.

Elsewhere, amounts were generally lighter -- however, Snowbasin picked up 6-8" on the upper mountain per webcams and their Boardwalk sensors showed significant water accumulation.  BCC was in the 5-7" range for this storm. Park City only picking up a couple inches here and there.

Overall, I'd say the storm was a disappointment -- although the riding in LCC, in particular, could be good this morning (Tuesday). I know it's now the second half of April and expectation should be tempered, but I just want one more good powder day. Just one more, I swear!

Unfortunately, after today, that's unlikely to happen soon. High pressure is going to take control by the weekend. We will have a trough brush northern Utah on Wednesday and there is a slight chance for some light snow showers Wednesday morning. After that, we clear out and warm up for the weekend.

In fact, there's really not much in the forecast through the middle of next week. Here is the current 8-day GFS precip forecast:

Not much for Utah. Looking deeper into the crystal ball, there are some indications of a chance for a low-pressure system to drop down into the Great Basin at the end of the month of April, but very low confidence in this at this point.

I am going to take a break from forecasting until I see something consistently showing up in the models. Until then, enjoy some tranquil spring weather and a very healthy spring snowpack!
