Snowy Pattern Takes Hold Across the West

Summary

A series of storms will bring heavy snow to much of the West over the next 7 days, favoring Tahoe, the Southwest, and the Rockies for the deepest totals. The East will see a quiet pattern with mostly dry conditions and minimal snow potential.

Short Term Forecast

Snowy Start to February for the West:

The first in a series of storms reached the Sierra Nevada Range on Thursday with heavy snow reported from Tahoe to Mammoth (pictured below) during the daytime hours. Snow will pick up across the Rockies heading into the weekend, with additional storms for the Sierra and the Rockies next week.

Forecast for Fri (Feb 2) to Sat (Feb 3):

A storm will move from the Sierra into the Rockies, with leftover snow showers around Tahoe while heavy snow can be expected from Utah into Colorado and New Mexico. Moderate snowfall can also be expected across the Northern Rockies. In the East, a weak disturbance will bring light snow showers to New England.

Forecast for Sun (Feb 4) to Mon (Feb 5):

A strong storm will impact the Sierra Nevada Range with heavy snow expected from Tahoe to Mammoth, while the SoCal Mountains will be hit as well. The Northern Rockies will also be favored in this pattern with snow from the weekend storm on Sunday, while another round will arrive from the southwest on Monday.

Forecast for Tue (Feb 6) to Wed (Feb 7):

A stormy pattern will continue across the West with the focus of heavy snowfall shifting from the Sierra into the Rockies. At the moment, heavy snow looks to be a good possibility from the San Juans northward to the Tetons.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu (Feb 8) to Mon (Feb 12):

The pattern will slowly begin to relent across the West, but lingering unsettled conditions with weaker storms will remain possible, with the Southwest looking like the most favored area. The East will remain in an unfavorable pattern for snow with temperatures running well above average.
