Snow Chances Increase Across the West Next Week

Summary

High pressure will lead to mild conditions over the West on Friday and Saturday, but the pattern will gradually trend cooler and more active early next week with snow chances ramping up. The East will see cold temperatures over the next 5 days with periods of light snow, followed by a warm-up after Christmas.

5-Day Snow Forecast:

The West will head into a more favorable pattern from Sunday through Tuesday as cooler air arrives and stronger storms begin to impact the West Coast. The North Cascades, BC Coast Range, and Northern Sierra will see the highest snow totals early next week with lighter amounts for the Central Rockies.

Forecast for Fri (Dec 20) to Sat (Dec 21):

Weak storms will move into the Northwest with warm air and high snow levels expected. Cascade ski resorts will see rain while light snow will be confined to higher terrain in British Columbia. Snow levels will eventually start to lower on Saturday night as colder air arrives.

A weak storm will move across the Appalachians from northwest to southeast, producing light to moderate snow showers across the Mid-Atlantic and New England.

Forecast for Sun (Dec 22) to Mon (Dec 23):

A cooling trend will begin out West with light snow expected across the Rockies, while Western BC and Washington will see a stronger storm arrive on Monday night with heavy snow possible. A storm will move across the Upper Midwest with light snow developing on Monday, and this snow will reach the Northeast on Monday night.

Forecast for Tue (Dec 24) to Wed (Dec 25):

Stronger storms are expected to move into the West but confidence in the favored storm track is low. The Northwest and possibly Tahoe have the best chances of seeing significant snowfall, while the Central Rockies may end up with lighter amounts, though this could change between now and then.

The Northeast could pick up some snow on Tuesday, but warmer air will arrive on Wednesday, and some areas could see a changeover to rain or mixed precipitation.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu (Dec 26) to Mon (Dec 30):

The pattern will continue to favor the Northwest with frequent shots of snow for the Cascades, BC, and Northern Rockies. Tahoe could also see heavy snow at times on the southern fringe of the favored storm track, while the Central Rockies will probably see lighter amounts.

The East will see a significant warm-up and a less favorable pattern with storms favoring rain or mixed precipitation.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (December 23).
