Wet & Windy Storm Friday, Mid to High Elevation Snow Sat to Tue
Summary
Rain closed Treble Cone Thursday, and a Tasman storm is now hitting Mt Ruapehu hard. South Island skiers should go early Friday before weather worsens. The storm will ease over the weekend, bringing mixed rain and snow.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Friday 11th July
A strong front brings rain across the country on Friday, hitting Mt Ruapehu early, Canterbury by midday, and the Southern Lakes later, with heavy downpours and some thick snow possible up high in the South Island. Gale-force northeasterlies will lash Mt Ruapehu, likely disrupting operations, while the South Island sees its best ski conditions in the morning.
Forecast for Saturday 12th to Monday 14th July
The weekend brings mostly cloudy skies and patchy rain or snow for South Island fields, especially near the Main Divide, with improving conditions and a light snow dusting by Sunday night. Mt Ruapehu sees heavy rain ease to snow showers on Saturday, a brief rain/snow period Sunday, and lingering showers Monday, all with brisk northwest winds.
Forecast for Tuesday 15th July
A westerly storm on Tuesday is set to bring light snow across the ranges, reaching base elevations in the Southern Lakes, and settling higher up on the slopes in Canterbury and Mt Ruapehu.
Extended Forecast
A brief ridge of high pressure on Wednesday will be followed by another Tasman storm hitting Mt Ruapehu with rain and snow, with potential for a solid snow dump in Canterbury, before conditions settle for the weekend.
Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out on Monday.
