Best Days of the Season, Plus a Light Dusting on Monday
Summary
New Zealand is buzzing with excitement after a major winter storm blanketed South Island ski resorts with deep powder. Final storm measurements are impressive: Treble Cone and The Remarkables received over 70cm and 67cm respectively, Coronet got 20cm at base and 40cm higher up,and Cardrona had 41cm. Canterbury saw even more, with Mt Hutt at 83cm and Ohau, in the MacKenzie Basin, leading with 93cm.
Short Term Forecast
Friday and the Weekend (2nd to 4th August)
Expect a pristine day on Friday, with a chilly E-SE breeze, although clouds will linger in Canterbury, impacting some resorts until the afternoon.
All South Island resorts will enjoy another stunning, clear, and calm winter day on the Saturday.
Another fantastic day for all South Island resorts is to come on the Sunday, though high clouds will appear over the Southern Lakes in the afternoon. Light breezes, mainly from the W-NW.
Monday & Tuesday (5th & 6th August)
Extended Forecast
Another cold storm will move up the country from late Wednesday through Thursday, likely bringing fresh powder to all NZ resorts. Mt Ruapehu on the North Island could potentially see a lot more snowfall on Friday, August 9th, into Saturday, August 10th, which would be a welcome boost for the snow-deprived mountain. A weak storm may also pass over the South Island next weekend, August 10th and 11th, potentially bringing some light snow showers.
Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
