Bluebird through Thursday; topsy-turvy Friday-Sunday

Summary

High Pressure aloft will bring us sunny days and warm afternoons at Idaho's ski areas through Thursday. A Low Pressure trough off the coast will push inland Friday, and send unstable weather our way through Sunday, raising the chance of thunderstorms and wacky spring weather in the afternoons. Dress up for spring skiing and get your cardboard derby entries ready for the weekend!

Short Term Forecast

A nice tribute pic to Schweitzer Mountain's professional ski patrol (courtesy Schweitzer Mountain Resort). The mountain will be closing for the season on Sunday, with a long list of special events including the Schpring Finale from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.

Enjoy the spring skiing/riding through Thursday without interference! And then we'll see things get a bit unstable Friday-Sunday - mainly raising the chance of thundershowers, graupel, hail and wind in the afternoons, depending on location.

Schweitzer will have warmish high temps in the low 40s Wednesday and Thursday, and Lookout will be in the mid-40s to 50 on Thursday with all sunshine. Friday-Sunday, the temps stay warm but the unstable weather moves in for the afternoons each day. Temps will be unseasonably warm in the 50s through the weekend. The same forecast will hold true for Silver Mountain, re-opening on Saturday-Sunday.

Brundage will have sunny and daytime highs in the mid-40s Wednesday and Thursday, and then the unstable weather moves in Friday, with a 60 percent chance of precip Friday afternoon and rain Friday night. Saturday looks mostly sunny for their cardboard derby with a 40% chance of precip in the afternoon. Sunday forecast is mostly sunny with a high of 52 degrees and then chance of wintry mix; snow level 7,500 feet.

Bogus Basin and Sun Valley are forecast to mostly miss the unstable weather. Bogus will have high temps in the 40s Wednesday, and then 50s Thursday-Sunday. Almost 60 degrees on Saturday! Sun Valley will see daytime highs in the high 30s Wednesday and then 40s Thursday-Sunday. Slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoons Friday-Sunday.

Pomerelle will close out the season on Saturday-Sunday with mostly sunny weather and a little bit unstable in the afternoons. High temp of 63 degrees on Saturday for their pond skim event and 57 degrees on Sunday.

Extended Forecast

A storm system will move in next Tuesday-Thursday, April 16-18. Most ski areas will be closed at that point,  but we'll keep a watch on things for the bonus weekend, April 20-21, at Brundage, Bogus, Silver Mountain and Sun Valley.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
