Snowy Weak Ahead

Summary

Two storms will bring solid snow totals across the Alps and Pyrenees starting this weekend. Both the northern and southern Alps, as well as the Pyrenees, will get in on the action. More storms are on tap for the end of the month as this active period continues.

Short Term Forecast

There aren’t too many changes to the forecast since yesterday’s post. The first of these two storms will bring moderate totals to the northern Alps from Saturday morning through Monday morning. The second storm, favoring the southwestern Alps, will deposit substantial snow from Monday night through Friday.

Both of these storms will come in two waves, but with little to no break in between, it will likely blend together in the end. There won’t be too much of a break between the two storms themselves, either.

Snow totals from yesterday's forecast remain on track, with 15 - 30 cms in the northern Alps from storm #1 as you can see below. The deepest totals still look to fall in the western side of the northern Alps, from northern France through western Austria.

The second storm next week will bring moderate to heavy snow through Thursday, with showers lingering into Friday morning. This storm will bring an extended period of east and southeast winds, due to the track through central Italy. This Retour d'est will hammer the typical locations in the Italian Alps, as you can see below.

This storm has the potential to bring .5 - 1 m of snow to the western Alps in Italy.

Extended Forecast

The strong upper-level low developing off the coast of France/Spain could bring additional storms into central Europe as early as the weekend. This feature will likely send several waves into the Alps, as the low remains mostly stationary for several days. I will keep you updated as more details emerge regarding the next storm cycle.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
