Heavy Snow Continues on Friday
Summary
The western Alps have been getting hammered so far, and soon the focus will shift to the southern Alps of Italy and Austria. Heavy snow persists through Saturday morning before precipitation becomes more showery through the rest of the weekend. The next strong storm arrives on Monday and lasts through the middle of the week. More snow is possible later in the week as well.
Short Term Forecast
Significant accumulations are already being reported in the western Alps in France and Italy, with 20 - 40 cms on the ground. Heavy snow continues in the western Alps through midday before turning more showery.
In the southern Alps of Italy and Austria, heavy snow continues on Friday. This will last through Saturday morning, before becoming showery thereafter.
On the northeastern side of the Alps, snow is becoming more heavy this (Friday) morning and will continue through Saturday morning as well.
Most of the heavy snow is finished in the Pyrenees, with showers for the remainder of Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday and Sunday, snow will be showery across the Alps with modest additional accumulations. Snow totals from the previous forecast remain on track.
The next storm will arrive in the Pyrenees as early as Sunday morning, and in the western Alps on Sunday night. The latest guidance has a storm track that brings a prolonged period of east and southeast winds to the Alps, more of a Retour d'est storm. This would bring the biggest snow totals to the eastern side of the western Alps, as you can see below.
The trajectory of the storm will produce a period of southwest and southerly winds as well, allowing for the western Alps and Austrian side of the southern Alps to get in on the action too. The northern side of the Alps from Switzerland to Austria will be on the leeward side of the winds. As this storm lingers south of the Alps it should keep snow going through the middle part of the week. Here's the latest snow forecast from the European model for this storm.
Extended Forecast
Later next week into the weekend should remain active with more storms possible. The latest guidance has storms coming in from the northwest favoring the northern Alps. It's too early to focus on the details but more snow is likely during that time.
