NEW: Forecast Snowfall Maps

Visualize the snow forecast in 2D or 3D for the next 6, 12, and 24 hours, along with total snowfall for the next 10 days, for any location in the United States and southern Canada on OpenSnow.

Getting Started

  1. Tap the "Maps" tab.
  2. Tap the overlay button.
  3. Tap "Forecast Snowfall".
  4. Scrub the bottom slider.

What are the main use cases for the forecast snowfall maps?

  • Get an easy-to-use visualization of the snow forecast for your favorite locations, check the timing of upcoming storms to catch the deepest turns or to avoid snowy road conditions, and see which ski resorts are favored for the deepest snow totals.

How do you make the forecast snowfall maps?

  • We make the forecast snowfall maps with our internal blend of forecast data from multiple global and high-resolution weather models. The maps also include our proprietary snow-to-liquid ratio algorithm that is specifically made for cold temperatures in complex, mountain terrain. Tap here to learn more about how we create the hourly and daily forecasts on OpenSnow.

How often are the forecast snowfall maps updated?

  • The forecast snowfall maps are updated every 12 hours with the latest available forecast data.

What resolution are the forecast snowfall maps?

  • The forecast snowfall maps are currently available in 2.5 km (~1.5 mile) resolution.

Why are the forecast snowfall maps only available over North America?

  • The forecast snowfall maps are only available for the contiguous United States and southern Canada due to the computing power needed to create these maps. Don't worry international folks, we are working to provide these maps for the entire globe in the near future.

Are there any limitations to the forecast snowfall maps?

  • The forecast snowfall maps count "mixed precipitation" as "snow" so the maps could show more snow in areas that are getting sleet or freezing rain, along with where the rain/snow line is difficult to forecast. Double-check any location by tapping the map for the forecast details.

The maps are currently only available on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com/map). They will be available in the OpenSnow app (iOS & Android) very soon.
