January 2024 Snowpack Update
Following a below-average start to the season, the snow machine finally turned on across the Western US during the first half of January, with numerous ski resorts picking up FEET of snow over the past 10 days. This added a healthy boost to the snowpack, especially across Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and northern New Mexico.
The map below shows the percentage of snowpack compared to the 1991-2020 median snowpack for January 15, 2024. Red is well below average, yellow and green are below to near average, and blue/purple is well above average.
This map is based on the weight of the snow on the ground, measured by automated backcountry weather stations called SNOTEL.
