Sunshine and Dustings as Cold Southerlies Persist
Summary
New Zealand ski fields got a boost after midweek rain, with cold southerlies bringing 2–6 cm to the Southern Lakes and up to 15 cm in Canterbury. Mt Ruapehu saw light snow too. More dustings are expected through the weekend before winds turn northerly on Monday.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd August
Light snow clears the Southern Lakes early Friday, followed by fine weather as cold southerlies ease. Canterbury sees snow in the morning before clearing later. Saturday brings mostly fine conditions, though strong winds hit the Southern Lakes and Canterbury gets a light snow that night. Sunday is a clear, bluebird day with winds shifting to the northeast.
Forecast for Monday 4th to Wednesday 6th August
Monday brings fine weather with some high cloud and mild northeast winds. Cloud increases Tuesday and Wednesday as winds strengthen from the northwest ahead of an approaching storm system.
Extended Forecast
Beginning Thursday 7th August, a sluggish weather system from the west will move across the country, kicking off with rain and snow at higher altitudes before colder conditions set in, bringing widespread snowfall later in the week.
