Australia Daily Snow

By Mike O'Connor, Meteorologist Posted 10 months ago August 28, 2024
High winds persisting throughout the week
Summary
Strong winds last night reached 128km/h at Thredbo Top Station, and they'll continue through the week, affecting lift operations and eroding the snowpack. Cooler air today will lower snow levels to 1500m tonight, with 5-15cm expected at higher elevations. Another brief dip in snow levels on Saturday could bring 10-15cm to the peaks.
Short Term Forecast
Wednesday & Thursday (28th & 29th August)
Northwesterly winds will be strong on Wednesday, reaching gale to severe gale force in exposed mountain regions, making conditions difficult. Showers in Victoria will extend to New South Wales later in the morning, with snow falling above 1800-1900m, and lowering to 1500-1600m by the evening.
Victoria will experience light showers on Thursday, with snow initially falling near 1500m but rising to 1800m or higher by morning. New South Wales will have a partly cloudy day. Strong westerly winds will gradually shift northwest and ease slightly.
Friday and the Weekend (30th August to 1st September)
Expect a tough day on Friday, with intermittent rain and severe northwesterly winds, which will ease to gale force later. Snow is likely above 1800m during the night.
Showers will persist throughout the day on Saturday, with snow briefly dropping to 1600-1700m in the morning before rising to around 1900m. Up to 10-15cm of snow may accumulate at higher elevations, but only some are expected at lower levels. Gale to severe gale northwesterlies will affect exposed areas.
Northwesterly winds will continue on Sunday, with rain and high-elevation snow persisting.
Extended Forecast
A cold southwest change on Monday may bring some snow to base levels. However, by next Wednesday, strong northwest winds are expected to return, accompanied by rain as fronts move through, but no snow is forecast.
Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
