New model solutions have changed today from previous thinking that the active Western storm track would stay north of Arizona. Models now stall the west coast trough off of California over the coming days, finally bringing it into AZ Tuesday-Wednesday 12/6-7.

Southwest BC is right on the fringe of a storm located off the WA Coast, which will bring heavy snow to Vancouver Island and light accumulations to the North Shore Mtns. All other areas will see flurries at best. Saturday-Monday will be dry, then light snow is possible Tue (Dec 6) to Wed (Dec 7). The pattern should then turn more active during the second half of next week.

Pow for the South - Cold and Clear to End the Week

The storm system that brought 30cm to Castle Mountain in the South Rockies over the last 24-hours will slowly move out on Thursday. Fringes of that system also brought 4 – 6cm to Nakiska, Norquay, Sunshine, Louise, and Marmot. A cold high-pressure ridge builds in for Thursday – Saturday before a weakening storm system brushes the South Rockies on Sunday.

The pattern stays unsettled with the deepest chases in the Sierra, Tetons, and Wasatch on Friday. The Sierra will score 2 feet again this weekend. Winds have been an issue in the past 24 hours at many locations. The PNW takes a break while the Rockies fire again by early next week.

Friday will be a stormy day with intense snow through the early afternoon and very strong winds. On Saturday, we could see more snow moving from south to north through the day and into Saturday night. Sunday will be mostly dry. On Monday and Tuesday, a narrow band of snow could produce sneaky powder. Then more snow could fall on Wednesday and Thursday. That's a lot of action!

Last week's snow was just what many resorts in the Alps and Pyrenees needed. Snowfall totals during this period enabled many resorts to open, and many others to open soon. Some were treated to powder on opening day as well. The Alps we'll see light snowfall through Saturday, some heavier snow to end the weekend, and the chance for a bigger storm around December 8th.

Heavy snow Tuesday-Thursday from Schweitzer to Sun Valley added 1-3 feet of new snow to base levels, creating great fresh powder conditions for Friday as a number of ski areas reopen for the weekend. High clouds and cold temps will prevail on Friday on the heels of the storm, and then skies clear Saturday. A new storm system comes Sunday with 3-7" of new expected in Central and SW Idaho. Enjoy!

Quite a storm on Thursday & Thursday night with new snow totals on Friday AM ranging from 11-21 inches in the Tetons & 4-10 inches in the valley. JHMR was the big winner with up to 21 inches on the upper mountain! Lingering snow showers Friday AM will give way to a break on Friday PM & Saturday. The next storm will arrive on Sunday with a nice refresher. More snow showers possible Mon-Tue as well.

Friday will be sunny and calm. Friday night the next storm enters the region and by Saturday morning snow will start falling. This will be a prolonged snowfall event that lasts through Monday morning. By later in the day Monday we should clear out and there should be clouds and sun the rest of the week. 24-hour snow totals favored NW Montana with 14” at Lookout Pass and 9” at Whitefish and Turner. East of the Divide, Big Sky reported 8” with around 5” at Teton Pass. The deep trough of low-pressure that has tapped into an AR of Pacific moisture will move into the Northern Rockies Thurs night keeping the snow falling across the Treasure State with most places seeing an additional 4 – 8” by Friday.

Several systems will pass to our north on Friday and through the weekend bringing mostly windy conditions to the northern mountains with very little precipitation. The southern mountains will see good precipitation on Saturday and Sunday but most of this will fall as rain. There are glimmers of hope for snow around December 7th and 10th but with very little confidence.

The West has experienced an impressive storm cycle this week with deep totals adding up across the PNW, Rockies, and Tahoe. The tail end of this storm will deliver the goods to Colorado on Friday. Another storm will then bring heavy snow to Tahoe on Sunday, with moderate snow expected across the Rockies on Sun-Mon. The East will see a transition to a more favorable pattern heading into Mid-Dec.

A significant late-season heatwave will persist across the West throughout the holiday weekend before eventually relenting mid to late next week. Daily record highs are likely across much of the West and some areas will break Sept monthly records as well. Smoky conditions have also become more widespread across the Northwest & Northern Rockies. Cooler temps will finally arrive late next week.
